Empire Diner

Cross Street: 22nd St.
The Empire Diner is an idealized New York diner: art deco, with lots of chrome, a menu with quirky commentary in fine print, open 24 hours.

You wouldn't be embarassed taking your parents to the Empire Diner, with its great ambience and retro-hip comfort. The food is a bit more expensive than the average diner, but it's also a bit better. Unfortunately the quality is rather variable, though portions are extremely generous. It's on the edge whether it deserves 2 or 3 stars for food. The ingredients are generally higher quality than at most diners, but the cooking is not as polished as at most restaurants. Thus, sometimes the food is very good. Sunday brunch is a good bet, when they often have piano accompaniment. The place draws a great mix of people and service has invariably been friendly and relaxed.
